Motocross legend revived

A 32-year-old Spanish designer is planning to breathe fresh air into a legendary motocross brand from the Seventies.
“There are two types of race freaks – Bultaco Pursang freaks and non Bultaco Pursang freaks,” reads a 1975 copy of Motocross Action. “If you want to win in motocross, get a Bultaco Pursang, hold it wide open and hang on!” it continues.
But since 1975 the Bultaco Pursang brand has all but vanished. Now a 32-year-old Spanish automotive designer, Jim Palau-Ribes, plans on reviving the brand.
Palau-Ribes has just released the first set of CAD drawings and is planning to start building the prototype in the new year. According to the designer, the modern Pursang bike is based on the values of the 70s model with substance and high quality components, and fuses retro styling with modern technology.
The Pursang 450 is scheduled to be the first to launch, with a Pursang 250 following in its tracks. Palau-Ribes explains that the Pursang 450 is “a genuine modern motocross bike with a ‘retro-futurist’ style and some references to the ‘twin shock’ bikes from the 60s and 70s.”
A 450cm3 four-stroke engine will power this model, with forks and suspension coming courtesy of Öhlins. The centre of gravity of this modern interpretation will be lower than that of the original.
“We thought that the project should keep the essence from the golden era of the Spanish motorcycle brands and its dynamic qualities,” explains the designer.
He adds the company plans to pursue exclusive and innovative projects which revolves around hand-built quality.
